Getting children into Grade 1: Social workers to the rescue!

Meet Benson Sr Beets Siyawareva, one of our social workers here at Valley Development Projects. Benson and the other social workers have assisted numerous parents in obtaining late registration birth certificates for their children so that they can attend Grade 1 this year. This is just one of the seemingly simple yet really quite complicated matters that these incredible humans do to assist children and their families in Ocean View and Masiphumelele.

No child in SA may attend Grade 1 without a birth certificate, and late registration can be quite a complex process; especially when then the mother cannot present herself along with child at home affairs for whatever reason. Benson recently dealt with a case where a child was almost going to attend Grade R for the third year in a row, purely because the child still had no birth certificate. Fortunately our social workers got wind of the situation and were able to intervene and eventually obtain a birth certificate for the child who has now happily progressed into Grade 1.

We URGE all mothers to please ensure they register their children. Under no circumstance should a child’s learning development be delayed, unless a specific exemption has been obtained from a psychologist. At Valley Development, our door is always open if you are struggling with this process.
